HORNING, THOMAS A. Thomas A.
Horning, life long resident of South bay, died of congestive heart
failure at his home in Chula Vista surrounded by his family. He was
69 years old. Tom graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1956 and
graduated from San Diego State with a Bachelors degree, majoring in
Business, Real Estate and Economics. He served in the United States
Army, Artillery Division and the California National Guard for six
years. He was one of the youngest in the State to receive his Real
Estate Brokers License and one of the youngest Chartered Property
and Casualty Underwriters in the State when he passed the test. He
was a Licensed Insurance and Life Insurance Agent, Expert Witness
and a Bail Bondsman. He maintained his licenses throughout his life.
Tom was active in several businesses starting his career with his
father, Walter, in the Insurance profession which became Horning &
Horning Insurance. The company also operated a Property Management
Company, he owned several Apartment buildings. He was one of the
founders of People's Bank and Chairman of the Board and was
Treasurer-Sweetwater Authority from 1973-1976 and Treasurer of the
South Bay Irrigation District 1972-1976. He was a 55 year member
Order of De Molay and received its highest honor - The Legion of
Honor. His love of motorcycles led him into the motorcycle business
and he was signed as a Harley-Davidson dealer in July 1984 and had
recently relocated the dealership from Chula Vista to a new and
larger site in National City. Tom is survived by his wife and
companion of many years, Marianna; stepdaughters Anastasia (General
Manager of Sweetwater Harley-Davidson), Angeliki, Alexandra and
stepson, Stamati and five grandchildren. Tom was an avid reader, his
favorite books were SciFi and sea stories about 17th and 18th
century sea wars. His hobbies included motorcycles, guns and cars.
Tom was a proud grandfather and wanted to teach his grandson about
gun safety. A Memorial Service
will be held on the upper deck of Sweetwater Harley-Davidson, 3201
Hoover Ave., National City, CA 91950, on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at
3:30 pm. The country's First
International Toy Run was started by Tom and the Solos Angeles of
Tijuana. This past year was the 22nd Annual Tijuana Toy Run which
has had as many as 4,000 motorcyclists leave the Dealership carrying
toys and bicycles to the underprivileged children of Tijuana. Tom
was working on an annual run to benefit "Trinity Children's
Foundation" which is a foundation that breaks the cycle of child
abuse and neglect. The first annual run is scheduled to take place
on October 19, 2008. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to
